Reverend W. Gordon Mullinax
Central, SC
Rev. W. Gordon Mullinax passed away peacefully in his home Monday, February 25, 2013.
Gordon was born December 10, 1930, to the late Dr. R.C. Mullinax and Helen Rampey Mullinax in the town of Central, South Carolina. During his early years, Gordon was a block mason and member of the United States National Guard. Gordon loved education and received degrees from both Central Wesleyan and Chandler School of Theology at Emory University with a Master of Divinity. His first pastoral position was in 1957 at the Yellow Branch Church in Rustburg, Virginia, and over his 55 years of dedicated service to Christ, he led congregations around the Southeast, including the same church in South Carolina which his great, great-grandfather helped to establish during the 1800s. Gordon was known as a great communicator, both in the spoken as well as the written word, and friends and family felt blessed to be on the receiving end of either.
In July of 1981, Gordon and Diane melded their two families by marriage and together they spent the remainder of his years with the Florida United Methodist Conference in Lakeland, Florida, and the Florida Keys where he eventually retired December 31, 1995.
After retirement, Gordon dedicated time to several community churches and found peaceful solitude with family and friends at his retreat in the Georgia mountains where he tirelessly searched for local hidden waterfalls. Together, he and his wife Diane pursued their love of world travel and explored their genealogy in countries such as England, Germany, France, Ireland, and Greece. Gordon faithfully supported local restaurants; his favorite football team, the Clemson Tigers, with his brothers, and was unconditionally supportive and encouraging to his children and grandchildren.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents, brother-in-law Dewey Mullins, and son John Sikking.
In addition to his wife, Gordon is survived by his three brothers, Paul (wife Esther) Mullinax, David (wife Phyllis) Mullinax, John (wife Barbara) Mullinax, and a sister Margaret Mullins. He is also survived by his four sons and two daughters, Vanya (wife Fata) Mullinax, Rhett Mullinax, and Birk (wife Teresa) Mullinax, Michael Sikking, Beth (husband Tom) Still, and Laura Snow, and twenty-one grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon, March 2, 2013, at 3:00pm at ALIVE Wesleyan Chapel on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University.
