Dr. William Allan Tinsley 77, of Greenville and formerly of Clemson, husband of Carole Knudson Tinsley, died of an extended illness Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Springfield, IL, he was a son of the late William Omer and Hazle Elizabeth Archer Tinsley. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from University of Illinois and his PhD from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Tinsley was a professor of Agricultural Economics for 10 years at Michigan State University and retired in 1993 after 21 years at Clemson University. He was a pioneer in computer use for agriculture and extension work and was awarded the first Alumni Award for Distinguished Public Service. He was a very active member of the University Lutheran Church in Clemson and also at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenville. He was very instrumental in getting the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Building Fund started at Furman University as well as taking many of their courses that have been offered.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Carole, are two sons, Erik Tinsley and wife, Lisa of Suwanee, GA and Philip Tinsley and wife, Marjo of Longmont, CO; sister Evelyn Fulton of Chatham, IL; grandchildren, Heath Tinsley and Catherine Tinsley.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Specht and Lou Miller.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2310 Augusta Road, Greenville.

Graveside committal services will be held at 1 PM, Thursday at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, 330 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29609 or to Project Host, P.O. Box 345, Greenville, SC 29602.
