Walter J. Smith

Walter Johnson Smith, 82, of 514 Echo Circle, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at his residence.
Born in Liberty, Mr. Smith was a son of the late James Henry and Esther Sheriff Smith. He retired from Reeves Brothers Construction Company and he was a member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was a former deacon of Smith Grove Baptist Church. He was a highly decorated U.S. Army Veteran of World War II having received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, and he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-two years, Sarah Gillespie Smith of the home; a son, Jimmy W. Smith of Pickens; a daughter, June Smith of Belton; two sisters, Marie Oates and Ruth Nalley, both of Easley; four grandchildren, Pam Powell, Victor Smith, Steven Doll Jr. and Jennifer Kennedy; and five great-grandchildren, Chasity and Kuric Smith, Jared Powell, Trey Doll, and Jayla Kennedy. He was predeceased by a brother, William H. Smith.
Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Pendleton Street Baptist Church with the Reverends Scott Willis and Keith Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. Thursday at the church prior to the service.
