Waymon Perry Major, Jr., 86, of 134 Starlight Lane, Liberty, formerly of Piedmont and husband of Grace Finley Major died Sunday, March 1, 2009.

Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Waymon and Etta Fleming Major, Sr. Mr. Major was a retired farmer and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Piedmont and attended Flat Rock Baptist Church. Mr. Major loved tennis and fishing and spending time with Grace's great-grandchildren. He was an avid gardener, where he grew and donated vegetables for the Meals on Wheels. Mr. Major donated the land and help build the Wren Volunteer Fire Department, station 24, where he served as the station's first Chief. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 52.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Mike & Karen Major of Piedmont; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Joe Cely of Pamplico; a brother, Roy Major of Watkinsville, Georgia; sisters, Frances Major of Ashville and Lois Ford of Glendale, AZ; a step-son and his wife, Jimmy & Patty Finley of Easley; step daughters and their husbands, Susan and Larry Bagwell and Lisa and Steve Oglesby all of Liberty; grandchildren, Adam and Laura Major, both of Piedmont, Joseph Cely of Montgomery, Ala., and Ellen Travaglio of Johnsonville, SC; 4 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchildren.

Mr. Major was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Mrs. Florence W. Major; 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Liberty, burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Rd., Anderson, SC 29621.

The family will be at their respective homes.
