William Earl Childress

September 17, 1928 — December 10, 2024

Greenville

William Earl Childress, affectionately known to all as Bill, was born on September 17, 1928, in Laurens, South Carolina. He peacefully departed this life on December 10, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication.

Bill lived a fulfilling life marked by devotion to his family and an undeniable fondness for companionship. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the USS Princeton aircraft carrier, where he formed a bond with his fellow sailors and expressed his love for family by writing his mother letters every day while stationed abroad. His military service was just a chapter in a life filled with meaningful experiences and achievements.

For many years, Bill worked tirelessly as a brick mason foreman, a profession he embraced with pride. Through his hard work and commitment, he was able to provide for his loving wife, Jeannie, with whom he shared an extraordinary 77 years of marriage. Their partnership was a testament to true love, showcasing a rare and beautiful bond that few can claim such an accomplishment in a lifetime.

Bill’s personality was as warm and inviting as his favorite breakfast at Gus's Side Street Cafe, where he relished the simple pleasures of bacon, eggs, grits, and toast. He was a fun-loving man. He genuinely liked people, creating connections that filled his life and the lives of others with joy.

A passionate outdoorsman, Bill cherished hunting and fishing, spending countless hours immersed in nature. This love of the natural world was only rivaled by the affection he gave to his sweet dog, Harper. He enjoyed babying her, warming her food on the stove, and placing ice cubes in her water each day, ensuring she felt cherished. Harper was not just a pet to him; she was his baby, a reflection of the gentle and caring heart that defined him.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jeannie Childress; his daughter, Jodi Connis (David); his sister, Linda Garrett; his sweet puppy, Harper; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends he loved.

He is predeceased by his parents, Fred and Ruby Childress, his son, Michael Childress, and his brothers, Fred, Bob, and Edwin Childress.

As we remember Bill, we honor the loving family man he was, his legacy of kindness and friendship that touched everyone around him, and the memories he leaves behind. His spirit will forever linger in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
