William Washington (Bill) Coogler, Jr. 3 Commodore Dr., Salem, SC 29676, went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 4, 2011 in Greenwood, South Carolina. He was born July 11, 1931 to Beulah Hurley and William W. Coogler, Sr. in Social Circle, GA. He spent the remainder of his childhood in Chester, SC. He graduated from Chester High School in 1949 and Clemson Agricultural and Mechanical in 1953, graduating first in his Chemical Engineering major. He was wed to Elaine Joann Barsh, Aug. 15, 1953. They were married 43 years until her death, Jan 25, 1997. Their union was blessed with three sons, William Washington Coogler, III, Anthony Edward Coogler, and Richard Brian Coogler. He married Ann Lewis Massey, July 26, 1997. He served in the US. Air Force in Reno, Nevada, Springfield, Illinois, and Croton, England training SAC crews in 'downed' pilot communications. He was employed as a Chemical Engineer with Union Carbide for 33 years. His career took him to West Virginia, Connecticut, Iran, and Puerto Rico. During his tenure with Union Carbide his project group was responsible for the invention of the black garbage bag. He also served as a Purchasing Agent for Union Carbide on Park Avenue, New York, NY. He earned the degree of MBA at Pace University, NY. He retired to Clemson, SC in 1986 and subsequently to Keowee Key. For twenty years he was the owner and accountant for Coogler's Business Services. He served churches in West Virginia, Connecticut, and Clemson in various capacities. He was a friend to his wife, Ann's church, Open Door Baptist, Walhalla, SC.
Bill was an active member of First Baptist Church, Clemson, SC and an avid Clemson supporter and IPTAY member. He was the former treasurer of the reunion class of 1953.He was named Small Business Person of the Year 1993 by the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce. At the age of 12, he was the youngest Eagle Scout in the history of Chester County, SC. He participated in the Member Guest Golf tournaments and golfing groups at Keowee Key, and the Key Investment Group. He also enjoyed his, 'penny ante' Poker Club. He and Ann loved shag dancing and spending time with their blended family of five children and six grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife, Ann of the home, sons, William W. Coogler,III (Madeleine) Austin, TX, Tony Coogler, Clemson, SC, Richard B. Coogler, (Karen) Metairie, LA, stepdaughter, Stephanie M. McMann (Clay) Clinton, SC, stepson, Michael Massey, Salem, SC
Surviving grandchildren are: Emily Elaine Coogler, Benjamin Brian Coogler, and Sara Sloan Coogler, Metairie, LA, Stephen Andrew McMann, Joy Hannah McMann and Faith Victoria McMann, Clinton, SC.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved brother Arthur Lamar Coogler.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Clemson on Tuesday February8 at 11:00AM. Visitation and reception to follow at Open Door Baptist, Walhalla, SC.
