William Baker Furman, Jr. died Thursday, February 18, 2010, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Easley, February 3, 1918, Mr Furman was the son of William Baker Furman MD, and Mellicent Bacot deSaussure. He graduated from Easley High School and was the first Eagle Scout in Pickens County. He attended the College of Charleston.

In 1940 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in the US Army Air Corps and US Air Force as they were created as a pilot, Group and Squadron Commander. He trained fighter pilots during WWII and was part of Operation Red Wing in the Pacific involved in the testing of the hydrogen bomb. Post-war assignments included Germany, Turkey, Japan, and various domestic locations.

Mr. Furman retired as Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years, then worked for General Mills in Lodi and Vallejo, California and for military-contracted freight forwarders in Vietnam, Okinawa, and Guam. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association.

He married Elizabeth Widney April 26, 1942 at Lodi, California.
In 1974 they retired to Table Rock, Pickens County. Mr Furman bred Siamese Cats for over 30 years. He was a passionate tinkerer and took great satisfaction in repairing things for others.

He is survived by: one sister, Janette Furman Hamilton of Clemson; two daughters, Annette Furman Mitter, (Joseph) of Seattle, WA; Elizabeth Furman Gallant; one grandson, Mark Stephen Gallant, (Erin) and two great grandchildren, Sean and Mason of Everett, WA.
Mr Furman was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth; one brother, Thomas deSaussure Furman; and two sisters, Caroline Heyward Furman Hamilton, and Mellicent deSaussure Furman White.

A memorial service will be held 3:30pm, Saturday, February 27, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
