Dr. William Clyde Whitten Jr., 86, of Clemson died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Clemson Downs Health Care Center. Born in Tampa, Fla., on February 1, 1925, he grew up in Walhalla, S.C. He was the son of the late William Clyde Whitten Sr. and Mae Corbin Whitten.

Bill began his college education at Clemson College at the age of 16. His education was interrupted by World War II, in which he served as a sergeant in the US Army in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, before being wounded. For his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars.

After recovering from his injuries, he received his bachelor's degree from Clemson College. Bill earned a master's degree at Georgia Tech and a Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of Alabama. He served on the faculty of Clemson University, retiring as a professor of economics in 1983.

He was married to Pauline Cannon for 50 years until she died in 2000.

He was active in his church, both at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson and later at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Seneca. He served on the commission that restored the old jail in Pickens as well as Hagood Mill. He researched and wrote several genealogy books. His research papers and other historical items have been donated to the Special Collections Library at Clemson University.

He is survived by Julia, his wife of 10 years; daughters Cecelia of Florence, Sally of Charlotte, and Carol of Greenville; and his sister Vivian Owens of Seneca.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Seneca, with burial at the Old Stone Church cemetery in Clemson. The family will meet with friends at the church one hour before the service.
