William Henry Davis McGregor, died peacefully on July 26, 2014. Memorial service will be held on August 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC with the Rev. Laura Conrad and the Rev. Julie Schaff officiating.
Davis was born in Florence, S.C. to the late Garland McGregor and Mary McPhail Davis and attended public schools in Greenville, SC. He served his country in 1945 -1950 as a serviceman in the U.S. Navy and Reserve. After marrying Mary Monica Jackson in 1950, he received his Bachelor degree from Clemson in 1951, Masters degree from The University of Michigan in 1953 and Doctorate from Duke University in 1958. He then worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a tree physiologist, and joined the faculty of the Clemson University Forestry Department in 1960. In 1969, he became Head of the Department of Forestry at Clemson and in 1970 was appointed Dean of the newly created College of Forest and Recreational Resources.
In addition, Davis was a lifetime Presbyterian and a dedicated member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, serving the church in many capacities, including Elder since 1967.
Davis was married to the late Mary Monica Jackson and they had two children, William Henry Davis McGregor, Jr. (deceased) and Mary Monica Mcgregor Struble (husband James). He had 5 grandchildren, Gary Davis McGregor, Robin McGregor Wagner (husband Jake), Edward Earle Struble (wife Darcy), Thomas James Struble and Michael Davis Struble. In addition, he has 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor McGregor ter Horst and brother, Samuel G. McGregor (wife Linda) and predeceased by his brother, Garland McGregor.
